Is Game Of Thrones Fueling Dubrovnik's Tourism?

In recent years, the number of tourists flocking to Dubrovnik has surged, as figures by the Croatian Ministry of Tourism reveal, with 1.6 million visitors last year. As the tourism report further notes, Dubrovnik is not only recognised for its historical heritage and spectacular scenery, but also as the backdrop of several films and TV shows. Accordingly, the Mediterranean city became world-famous with the shooting of the fantasy drama TV series ‘Game of Thrones’. Recently, Forbes magazine headlined that ‘Game of Thrones' is Transforming Croatia into a "Kingdom Of Tourism", since Dubrovnik became a top spot for so-called “set-jetters”, a term which refers to a trend among movie fans choosing their travel destination according to film locations.

In 2011, broadcaster HBO started to shoot its second season in Dubrovnik using the scenes for the King's Landing (the capital of the Seven Kingdoms). Since then, Dubrovnik’s scenic setting has been used for the following seasons as well, making it worth a visit for many fans of the series.
