Reigning cats and dogs

The latest Pet Data Report from the Pet Food Manufacturers' Association has revealed the UK's most popular pets. Before you look at the data, it would be safe, and correct, to assume that either cats or dogs are on top, but which of the hairy critters has the edge?

With 23 percent of households home to at least one dog, our canine friends are the most popular pet in the country, compared to 18 percent for cats. According to the report, there were a total of 8.5 million and 8 million dogs and cats in the UK in 2017, respectively. All in all, there are an estimated 54 million pets, and you can expect to see at least one in almost half of all households. At the more obscure end of the list, there are around 200,000 lizards and 100,000 frogs and toads.
