Amazon Dominates the U.S. E-Commerce Landscape

Despite its increasingly diversified business, Amazon remains an e-commerce company at its core – and a highly successful one. According to estimates from Statista’s ecommerceDB, a database profiling more than 20,000 online stores worldwide, Amazon is by far the largest online shopping destination in the U.S. with net sales (excl. third-party sales) amounting to $73.75 billion in 2019.

As our chart illustrates, no company comes even close to matching Amazon’s footprint in the U.S. e-commerce landscape. Second-placed Walmart sold $19.61 billion worth of merchandise online last year, which is less than a third of Amazon’s haul.

The following chart shows the top 10 online stores in terms of net sales in 2019. To find out more about ecommerceDB and the methodology applied, click here.
