Women Projected to Win Big on State Ballots
Women, minorities, and LGBTQ candidates have been turning out at historic rates across national, state, and local elections to run for political office after the 2016 presidential election and subsequent presidency, which many in those groups saw as a blow to their civil rights.
According to an analysis from Reuters, if women who are currently running achieve the 60 percent success rate female candidates have historically achieved, women could make up 40 percent of state legislatures come 2019.
This surge at the state level could lead to another surge at the national level in future election cycles, as many national candidates are plucked from lower, regional levels of governance.
