Road Safety

Which U.S. Cities Have the Need for Speed

Drivers in Portland have been speeding through the city. Over half of trips that Cambridge Mobile Telematics analyzed in the city found that the drivers were speeding. Cambridge Mobile Telematics used smartphone sensors to better understand the driving habits of people in the 50 largest cities in the U.S. Other speedy cities include Washington D.C. and Baltimore, where half of the analyzed trips in both cities were above the speed limit.

Most road related accidents come from human error, with drunk driving, speeding, and distracted driving among the top three causes of traffic fatalities. In the United States, speeding reportedly accounted for over a quarter of traffic fatalities. Across the Atlantic, the EU is debating mandating various safety features in cars made and sold in the EU, including features like speed modifying cars and breathalyzers built into cars. The Commission is also angling these new safety features as a way to get drivers adjusted to automated assistance, putting drivers on the road to fully automated vehicles.
