2020 Election

Over Half of Young Voters Certain to Vote

A new survey of young voters in the U.S. shows over 50 percent say they’re certain to vote in the upcoming presidential election.

Teen Vogue and market research company Ipsos teamed up to create their Young Voter Survey, which polled over 2,000 18 to 34-year-olds in the country on a variety of political and policy topics. In a question that asked young voters how likely it is that they would vote in the presidential election, 56 percent said they would certainly vote and 21 percent said they would probably vote. 15 percent said they either probably won’t vote or certainly won’t vote, while 8 percent said they didn’t know yet.

Other topics touched on policy issues important to young voters. Those who identified as Democrats predominantly said their top issues for a 2020 candidate were climate change, Medicare For All and reducing student debt. Those who identified as Republican said their top issues were stopping illegal immigration, protecting U.S. manufacturers and reducing student debt.

In terms of gun policy, 71 percent of Republican respondents labeled guns as their top priority compared to 92 percent of Democratic respondents.

Overall, less than a third of all young voter respondents believed President Donald Trump should be reelected. 23 percent of Republican respondents said they would not support Trump’s reelection, joining 85 percent of Democratic respondents and 61 percent of Independent respondents.
