10 Years Later: Key Numbers Behind The War In Syria

Syria is marking 10 years since the start of a 2011 uprising that led to full scale civil war. The unrest began in the city of Deraa and a decade later, more than half of the country's pre-war population of 23 million people remains displaced. According to the The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 387,000 people have died in the conflict including 117,000 civilians and more than 22,000 children.

Chemical weapons are believed to have been used on 38 occasions in Syria, of which 32 incidences were recorded by the regime, according to data collected by RTE. The worst single chemical weapons attack occurred in 2013 and killed an estimated 1,400 people. Just over 6 million Syrians are internally displaced while a further 5.6 million have been forced to flee abroad. The total cost of the war to the Syrian economy is estimated at around €1 trillion.
