The evolution of baby names in England & Wales

If you were born in 1996 and given the name Arthur or Isla, it's fair to say you were probably somewhat of a rarity on the playground during your early school years. Back then they were just the 234th and 382nd most popular names for boys and girls, respectively. In 2020 though things have changed. Arthur and Isla are now the third most popular baby names.

The Jacks and Sophies of the late 90's have now become Olivers and Olivias. That said, each of the top three names in 1996 still hold a fair level of popularity in 2020. Jack is still in the top ten, while Sophie is still hanging on in rank 26 for the girls. The biggest fall among the top three 1996 names was experienced by Daniel, which has since dropped to rank 50 for boys.
