The Indian Film Industry

The Indian film industry is actually the world's largest, something people tend to forget amid Hollywood's glamour, fame and financial muscle. The famous Bollywood nickname comes from the city formerly known as Bombay where the industry established itself, now present day Mumbai. By 2014, the film business in India will grow to an estimated 138 billion Rupees, equating to $2.28 billion.

In 2012, Bollywood produced 1,602 films compared to a mere 476 in the United States. India also beats Hollywood hands down in ticket sales. In the same year, Bollywood sold an impressive 2.6 billion. In the United States, this number was just 1.36 billion. Hollywood does have more financial clout, however, and leads the way in terms of box office revenue. American films grossed $10.8 billion in 2012. Even though India produced more films by far, they only managed $1.6 billion.
