How Widespread Is Distrust of Mainstream Media?

Distrust of the news is particularly widespread in the France, Japan and the United States. According to a survey by Statista Consumer Insights, 31 percent of respondents in France said they don't trust the mainstream media in their country, the highest share of the 31 countries polled. Respondents in Japan were similarly skeptical, with three in ten answering the same, while they were 29 percent in the U.S.

As our infographic shows, people in the UK were only slightly less likely to say they distrust the media. In Germany, this lack of confidence was slightly less prevalent: it only applied to a quarter of those surveyed. On the lower end of the spectrum were Mexico and India with 19 and 16 percent, respectively.
