Travel Plans Hit by Geopolitical Tensions & Rising Costs
Geopolitical tensions and rising travel costs are weighing on people’s holiday plans. According to Statista’s Consumer Insights, a majority of respondents surveyed in several major economies in the first half of 2026 say that international conflicts influence their choice of destinations, including 65 percent in the United Kingdom, 61 percent in Germany and 55 percent in the United States.
At the same time, higher prices are becoming a growing barrier. Around 45–47 percent of respondents across these countries report that costs have recently prevented them from booking travel or hospitality services. This comes amid elevated fuel prices and ongoing instability in parts of the Middle East, both of which are contributing to more expensive road trips and flights, as well as greater uncertainty around international travel. As a result, some travelers are opting for closer or domestic destinations, while others are delaying or scaling back their plans altogether.
