The statistic shows the market share held by operating systems worldwide on Desktop PCs from 2012 to 2016. In January 2014, the market share of Win7 was at 54.32 percent.
Windows 7 was first released back in July 2009 and as can be seen in the graph, use of this operating system has grown over time until it held the greatest share of the PC operating systems market around the world. Prior to Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP were the main operating systems on offer from Microsoft. As one might expect, since the introduction of updated Windows’ systems, the previous two operating systems, have subsequently experienced a decline in global market share over time. In 2012, an even newer version of the operating system was released under the name of Windows 8. While uptake of this latest version is going well, this operating system is yet to claim a significant share of the market, although this undoubtedly will increase steadily into the future. From the time of its release until recently, millions of Windows 7 licenses have been sold around the world. The newer Windows 8 version, has also sold more than 100 million licenses worldwide after just a short time on the market.
Within the U.S. market the PC operating system market share statistics also look similar. Windows 7 again also holds the greatest share of the market, while XP and Vista have experienced a decline over time. One clear difference however is that within the global market Apple’s share with the Mac system, has generally been hovering around the 5-7 percent mark over the past few years. Within the U.S. market, Apple’s market share with MacOSX has been sitting much higher around the 13-15 percent range.
