Computer operating systems - additional information
Microsoft's Windows 7 has been a leader in the computer operating systems market since at least early 2012, with almost 50 percent of the global market share over the years. Microsoft has sold a total of over 3.5 billion Windows 7 licenses worldwide. Prior to Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP were the main OS on offer from Microsoft. Since the introduction of Windows 7 in 2009, the previous two operating systems have subsequently experienced a decline in the global market. Windows XP, for instance, went from having a third of the market share in the beginning of 2012 to around seven percent by the end of 2015.
Microsoft has introduced three OSs after the Windows 7. The company released Windows 8 in late 2012, Windows 8.1 about a year after that and, more recently, Windows 10. Even though Microsoft has sold million of licenses for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 over the years, Windows 10 has been named by specialists as a possible substitute for Windows 7. As seen in the statistics above, Windows 10 is rapidly gaining in the market, and is already the third most popular OS worldwide, with over ten percent of the share as of December 2015.
Windows operating systems aside, Apple's Mac OS X has nine percent of the market share. The first version was released in 1999, with the most recent edition, "El Capitan", released in September 2015. The operating system is popular in the United States, where its market share stands at around 20 percent.
