First released in 2011, WeChat is a mobile messaging app developed by the Chinese company Tencent. In its home market of China, WeChat is marketed as Weixin and was rebranded as WeChat in 2012 for international audiences. As of the fourth quarter of 2015, WeChat had 697 million users, a significant increase from the previous year, when the messaging app had about 500 million users in that particular quarter. WeChat is one of the leading social networks worldwide, placing fifth in number of active users.
About 30 percent of WeChat users access the mobile messenger on a daily basis, and 20 percent of WeChat global users use WeChat Moments feature daily. WeChat Moments is just one of the many features of the app. Voice and text messaging, group messaging, payment and games are other examples of WeChat activities. The app also includes a following function whereby users can follow accounts. About 30 percent of WeChat users in China, for example, follow verified media channels on WeChat, and around 19 percent follow brand channels.
WeChat is the third most popular social networking sites in China in number of monthly active users, just behind Tencent-owned QQ and QZone. In China, the vast majority of WeChat users are Millennials . As of January 2015, 45 percent of WeChat users in China were between 18 and 25 years old, and 40.8 percent were between 26-35 years old. Users aged between 36 and 50 years old only accounted for 9.5 percent of the share. WeChat is also particularly popular amongst men – about 65 percent of WeChat users in China are men.
