Chinese Fireworks Light Up U.S. Skies
For many Americans, fireworks are a main staple of Independence Day celebrations. But with virtually all of the country’s fireworks imported from tariff-hit China, this year such pyrotechnic displays could be much more expensive than before.
According to the UN Comtrade Database, the U.S. imported roughly 120.4 million kilograms of fireworks in 2023, 99.6 percent of which, or just under 120 million kilograms, came from China. In monetary terms, the U.S. imported nearly $370 million worth of fireworks in 2023, with Chinese pyrotechnics worth $357 million brought into the country. The next biggest import partners were Spain and Italy.
