APAC

Facebook's highest user growth from APAC region

Facebook achieved a total of 1.47 billion daily active users (DAUs) during the second quarter of 2018, an increase of 343 million DAUs over two years. The Asia-Pacific region accounted for more than half of this growth, increasing by 200 million DAUs over the past two years to reach 546 million DAUs.

Despite Asia-Pacific users making up 37 percent of Facebook’s DAUs, the region only accounted for 17 percent of the company’s USD 13.23 billion revenue in the second quarter of 2018. This amounts to an average revenue per user (ARPU) of USD 2.62 in the Asia-Pacific region, compared with an USD 8.76 in Europe and a whopping USD 25.91 in the United States and Canada.

During the July 2017 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that Facebook can “look at messaging platforms that exist and see how they've successfully monetized in other parts of the world and have that be a floor.” Given the success apps such as Line and WeChat have had generating revenue in Asia, apps such as Messenger are set to be a crucial element in taking advantage of the huge number of DAUS in the Asia-Pacific region.
