COVID-19

Where Power is Shifting

Places of public utility and business remain closed as people remain under lockdown. New data shows how electricity consumption across the country is shifting to reflect the COVID-19 crisis.

Restaurants, gyms and car dealerships are among the businesses with some of the largest changes in power consumption. Restaurants pulled in 51 percent less power over the month of March, while car dealerships pulled in 67 percent less power.

Liquor stores, hospitals and storage units are pulling more power than before. In March, hospitals pulled 16 percent more power, while an increased usage of storage units rose their power consumption by 23 percent.

The COVID-19 crisis is creating a volatile energy industry, with some areas - like restaurants and schools - requiring little electricity when compared to before social distancing measures. Other areas - like individuals homes and hospitals - are requiring much more than usual.
