Living conditions

Hong Kong: Hot Spot of Apartment Dwellers

86 percent of Hong Kong respondents to a Statista survey said most recently that they lived in an apartment - the most out of 39 countries studied. Living conditions in the dense city are diametrically opposed to those in countries like Mexico, Australia or India where most people live in houses. Living in an apartment was also common in South Korea, Finland and Turkey.

In Mainland China, 66 percent of people live in apartments, comparable to the number in Italy. Within Europe, numbers differed as well, with around two-thirds of Italians, Czechs and Swiss people living in apartments, compared to just 19 percent in Ireland, 26 percent in the United Kingdom and 33 percent in the Netherlands.

In the United States, 36 percent of people occupied apartments, undercut by India (30 percent), Australia (23 percent), Pakistan (22 percent), South Africa (22 percent) and Mexico (20 percent).
