Physical Media

4 in 10 Americans Have Abandoned Physical Media

Even in the age of streaming, physical media still has a role to play in many people’s lives, though it’s clearly no longer the main act. According to Statista Consumer Insights, DVDs and CDs are the most widely used tangible formats in the U.S., while vinyl, despite its impressive comeback (and well-deserved cool factor), remains a niche choice in everyday use. Meanwhile, a sizable 42 percent of Americans have fully embraced the shift to digital, leaving discs and tapes behind for good.

Still, Record Store Day is proof that convenience isn’t everything. For many, physical formats offer something streaming can’t: a sense of ownership, ritual and maybe just a little nostalgia. Whether it’s flipping through crates, admiring album art or hearing that signature crackle, the charm of physical media lives on, even if it’s no longer the default option for most.
