The total number of beds available for tourists in Barcelona in 2020 amounted to more than 149 thousand. Hotels offered the largest number of those beds, totting up roughly 74 thousand. Homes for tourist use followed not too far behind, with over 58 thousand beds.

The expansion of Barcelona’s accommodation market before COVID-19

In the past three decades, Barcelona saw a considerable increase in the number of visitors who stayed in hotels. In the same mentioned period, the number of hotels in the Spanish city climbed up as well to more than 400 in the last years of the 2010s. Nonetheless, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic rolled back the numbers to levels recorded in the 1990s. As a result, the bed occupancy rate stood only at 35.5 percent in 2020, after rising above 70 percent between 2015 and 2019.

Costs of hotel rooms in Barcelona

In the summer months of 2021, the average cost for a standard double room in a hotel in Barcelona was around 140 euros, roughly 30 euros more than the prices in the winter months. Overall, July and August are the busiest months for the tourist accommodation industry in Spain.
