Of the countries under consideration in Africa and the Middle East, Saudi Arabia had the highest share of its adult population owning and running an established business, with nearly 14 percent. Iran, Morocco, and South Africa followed behind. On the other hand, less than four percent of Israel's and Oman's adult population was owning an established business in 2023.

Established businesses and their owner-managers often provide stable employment and exploit the knowledge and social capital accumulated in past experiences. Established businesses are also an important source of new businesses.
