Cannabis Legalization

The Rise of Canadian Cannabis Consumption

Today, Canada becomes the second country in the world (after Uruguay) to legalize the recreational use of cannabis. The new rules vary somewhat from province to province, but broadly speaking, as of October 17, people aged 18 and over are allowed to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis in public. It is also now legal to grow up to four plants at home.

As our infographic shows, using data from Statistics Canada, these new laws will be welcomed by a significant amount of people. As of 2017, an estimated 695,600 people aged 15 and over consume cannabis daily. Estimates for weekly use are 1.3 million.
