Migration

The Flight of the Migrant Millionaires

Migration conjures up images of the poor and hapless fleeing squalid conditions. However, there are migrant flows that have nothing to do with destitution. For some, migrating is not just a matter of seeking personal safety but also of trying to bring their wealth to securer shores.

As our infographic shows, France is one of the top sources of millionaire migrants, fleeing conditions which they seem to consider adverse. Probably, one of the main reasons is the taxation system that isn’t particularly friendly to the very wealthy.

According to data provided by New World Wealth, China is a constant source of rich refugees, while Brazil has had a steep increase in migrating millionaires. Turkey, witnessing political instability, has also seen her numbers go up considerably.

All countries with major inflows, apart from the United Arab Emirates, are majority English speaking countries with an Anglo-Saxon tradition of lenient taxation systems. Also check out what the Visual Capitalist has in store on this topic.
