Estimated share of maritime CO₂ emissions 2021, by flag country
In 2021, ships registered in Liberia were responsible for approximately 13 percent of global maritime carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which made them the second-largest emitter worldwide after ships registered in Panama. In that same year, these eleven economies accounted for some 72 percent of global maritime CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, the International Maritime Organization committed to achieving a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 compared to 2008.
