In 2020, there were an estimated migrant stock in the world of over 280 million people. Of these, 145 million resided in Europe or North America. North Africa and the Middle East was the second most common destination of migrants in the world. Moreover, a high number of migrants live within the same region as their country of origin. This is especially the case in Europe and North America as well as Central and South Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. There are varying reasons for people to emigrate from their country of origin, from poverty and unemployment to war and persecution.
