4 in 5 Smartphones Sold in Q2 Were Android Phones

Global smartphone sales grew 46.5 percent in the past quarter, as smartphones accounted for the majority of worldwide mobile phone sales for the first time. According to Gartner, 225 million smartphones were sold between April and June this year, as opposed to just 210 million so-called feature phones.

The vast majority of the smartphones sold in the past quarter were powered by Google’s open source operating system Android. Thanks to particularly strong growth in the lower-priced segment of the market, Android’s market share grew to nearly 80 percent. Apple’s iOS remains the second-largest smartphone platform, while Microsoft finally managed to establish Windows Phone as the No. 3 platform in the market. Other operating systems, such as Bada and long-time market leader Symbian are no longer relevant, as their share of the smartphone market has dropped below the 0.5 percent mark.
