Video Wins Subscribers, Can News Do the Same?

Apple made waves at its surprise event yesterday, where the likes of Tim Cook, Big Bird, and Oprah all teamed up to unveil the company’s newest string of services including, a news subscription, a credit card, a gaming package, and a video streaming service. Apple’s goal is to make these paid-for products easy to use in one place. Most of these products from Apple News+ to Apple TV to Apple Arcade, act as paid-for subscription aggregators with a range of exclusive content.

How successful Apple’s newest services will be hinges on people’s appetite for them. According to a survey conducted by Fetch and Pollfish, video services are currently a huge draw for people, with seven out of ten currently paying for a subscription. The interest in paying for a subscription service falls off quickly moving across different product categories. News subscription and gaming services were the two products in the survey least likely to have any pull for consumers. About six out of ten people said they were not considering paying for a subscription news service, while about half of respondents registered no interest in paying for a gaming subscription.
