Number of Green Energy Jobs Hits New Record

The renewable energy sector employed 13.7 million people in 2022, one million more than the previous year. As the following chart shows, employment in this sector has continued to grow globally since 2012, the year the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) began its annual assessment.

The branch employing the most people in the renewable energy sector last year was the solar photovoltaic industry, with 4.9 million jobs. Bioenergy, hydropower and wind energy followed.

IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera described 2022 as "an excellent year" for employment in renewable energy, but recalled that the creation of millions of additional jobs will require a much faster pace of investment in energy transition technologies.
