Glossary of Statistical Terms: Definition Range
The range is the distance between the largest and the smallest empirical value in a set of numerical values.
If, answering a question about body weight, the lowest given value were 115 lbs and the highest value 200 lbs – the range would be 85 lbs. If we evaluate a scale from 1 to 11 about personal satisfaction and the lowest given value of our survey is a 2, the highest a 10 – the range will be 8.
Please note that the definitions in our statistics encyclopedia are simplified explanations of terms. Our goal is to make the definitions accessible for a broad audience; thus it is possible that some definitions do not adhere entirely to scientific standards.
