Monthly commercial fleet demolition activity worldwide by vessel type 2019-2020
Since the end of 2019, global ship demolition activity has increased sharply as a consequence of higher fuel prices and adverse market conditions. From 350,000 deadweight tons in September 2019, the monthly demolition activity increased to 2.3 million deadweight tons in February 2020. This trend is expected to continue over the course of 2020, as owners face the increased underutilization of vessels brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
