In 2020, the United Kingdom's greenhouse gas emissions fell 9.5 percent from the previous year. This substantial reduction was caused by the outbreak of COVID-19 and resulting limitations on travel and other economic sectors. Annual greenhouse gas emissions in the UK have mostly declined since 1990, only increasing in six years during this period. The largest increase was in 2012, when emissions rose by approximately three percent compared with the previous year.
