Value of gross domestic expenditure on R&D in South Africa 2020-2022
In 2022, South Africa's gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) was 6.2 billion U.S. dollars, which was slightly higher compared to the six billion U.S. dollars in the previous year. The country was the largest spender on R&D as a share of GDP on the African continent. However, R&D spending in Africa was significantly lower than in other regions globally.
