RIM/Blackberry's revenue by business segment 2008-2020

In BlackBerry’s 2020 financial year, the company's revenue was around 1.04 billion U.S. dollars. The business segment that provided the majority of the revenue was IoT, followed by Licensing, then Blackberry Cylance. This is a noticeable difference from earlier in this decade, when devices were the predominant source of revenue for BlackBerry.

New focus on software

After moving away from smartphone production in 2016, BlackBerry adapted its business model to market trends towards software and the Internet of Things (IoT). For example, BlackBerry Technology Solutions has expanded from automotive infotainment units to driver assistance systems, instrument clusters, and domain controllers. Its strategy for revenue in this segment relies on the sale of products that include its imbedded software.

Enterprise of things

An increasing amount of physical devices are being embedded with electronics and internet connectivity, and BlackBerry is trying to position itself on the forefront of a new market related to this phenomenon: security challenges in the Enterprise of Things, BlackBerry's term for IoT for the enterprise market. Through its cybersecurity products that use artificial intelligence and machine learning to dismantle potential threats, BlackBerry secures endpoints and data flow.
