Falling revenue from fixed-line telephony
Fixed-line telephony remains a significant source of revenue for BT, despite revenue from this segment falling in recent years. Fixed-line network access and call revenue generated more than one billion British pounds per quarter for BT during the first three quarters of 2012. This fell to 803 million British pounds by the third quarter of 2018. Annually, the amount fell from 4.71 billion British pounds in 2010, to 2.75 billion British pounds in 2017. Drops in revenue are naturally linked to falling residential call volumes, with 7.48 billion minutes worth of calls made during the first quarter of 2012, compared with the 3.56 billion minutes made during the third quarter of 2017.
Fixed-line telephony around the world
The UK is far from the only country to experience a decline in fixed-line telephony. Estimates for the number of fixed telephone lines worldwide show the number of lines falling to levels not seen since the year 2000, with 942 million fixed telephone lines estimated to be active worldwide in 2018
