Number of horses in the European Union 2014, by country

Number of horses in the European Union in 2014, by country (in 1,000s)

Number of horses in the European Union 2014, by country This statistic displays the estimated number of horses in the European Union (EU-28) in 2014, by country. According to the estimates published by the Food and Agriculture Organization for the United Nations (FAO), Romania, France and the United Kingdom (UK) had the highest number of horses within the European Union. Horses play a huge role in human cultures, with uses in leisure activities, sport and for working purposes. Equestrian sports, such as show jumping and dressage, focus on the level of control and balance between horse and rider, while working roles include mounted police units and search and rescue teams. Currently, there are over three hundred breeds of horse worldwide with selective breeding allowing for the selection of genes for specific purposes, depending on the horse's future role. Horse breeds have thus developed due to a need for 'form to function', or in other words, to develop those certain characteristics that help in the performance of a particular type of work, such as heavy draft horses developed out of the need to pull heavy wagons and perform agricultural work.
