Alternative automotive fuel efficiency rates by type 2021
Battery electric vehicles have a much higher efficiency rate compared to other types of renewables-based propulsion systems. Only 23 percent of energy was lost when using renewable electricity to directly charge a battery electric vehicle. By comparison, green hydrogen-run fuel cell vehicles suffered a 39 percent energy loss due to electrolysis and transportation and storage alone, bringing fuel production efficiency to 61 percent and overall efficiency (when taking into account hydrogen to electricity conversion and engine efficiency) down to just 30 percent.
