Canada’s ICT sector generated annual revenues of more than 150 billion Canadian dollars in 2015, while contributing approximately 70 billion Canadian dollars to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) each quarter. Between 2015 and 2016, Canada’s ICT GDP contribution grew by 1.9 percent. The ICT sector is also a major provider of employment opportunities in Canada recording a total number of more than 900,000 jobs in 2016. Many of these jobs have emanated from the professional, scientific, and technical services industry - 44 percent of jobs in 2016. Slightly less than half the jobs created by the Canadian ICT sector are held by workers born outside of Canada.
The ICT sector in Canada comprises communications services, software and computer services, ICT manufacturing and ICT wholesaling. Canadian investment in the ICT sector has continued to enable and facilitate the broader exchange and implementation of ideas and data essential to innovation. Ontario generates by far the highest share of ICT sector output, by province.
