Travel and tourism in Latvia - statistics & facts
While the number of international visitors has increased, the number of domestic overnight trips taken by Latvians has decreased in recent years. However, the number of same-day trips has grown. The most popular destination for domestic same-day trips is Riga, the country’s capital, which has many sights, for example the old town – a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Just like domestic tourism, outbound tourism from Latvia has experienced a decline, with Latvians taking fewer trips abroad. Spending on outbound trips has decreased as well. Latvians’ reluctance to take trips may also explain why the most popular international destinations for Latvian travelers are Estonia and Lithuania – the two neighboring countries.
The accommodation industry in Latvia has been developing steadily, with the number of accommodation establishments growing. This may be attributed to the rising number of international tourists arriving in the country. The number of nights spent in travel accommodation has also been increasing.
