The spike in the number of blank and skipped sailings in the first half of 2020 was due to the coronavirus outbreak in China and its subsequent global spread, leading to a pandemic. In February 2020, there were 221 reported blank sailings worldwide, an increase of some 200 percent compared with the previous month. This number was surpassed in May 2020 when 263 cases of blank sailings were announced.
