Who Is Paying For Spotify?

Spotify, the Swedish-based podcast and music streaming platform, released its Q3 earnings for 2023 today. Since its launch 15 years ago, the company has become one of the world’s leading platforms in the field, listened to by some 574 million monthly active users, 226 million of whom (approx. 30 percent) are paying for a premium subscription. The following chart looks more closely at the topic, asking: how does the audio streaming platform’s popularity vary around the world?

Data from Statista’s Consumer Insights macro survey shows that respondents in Mexico were particularly likely to have paid for Spotify among the polled countries, surpassing even the results in Spotify’s hometurf of Sweden. In the United Kingdom and Spain, around a third of respondents had used the premium version of the service, while in France, this was significantly lower (19 percent). South Korea stands out for its low uptake, with only 4 percent of respondents having purchased a subscription in the past year. This is due to the fact that the country’s respondents opted for homegrown online music services such as Melon and Genie or for YouTube Music.
