The plastic industry in Austria has been a vital part of its economy. The industry is amongst the largest in Europe, comprising of nearly 600 enterprises, including some of the world renowned companies such as Greiner and Borealis and employs over 20,000 individuals. The industry witnessed a bit of a decline in production owing to the 2008 Eurozone crisis, with revenues plateauing between 2009- 2016. However, ever since, it has been experiencing growth, with revenues projected to increase from 7.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2016 to over 8.7 billion U.S. dollars by 2024. Amongst key reasons for the industry’s growth include robust development in the commercial and residential construction sector, packaging sector and the automobile sector, which are amongst the main users of plastic and plastic products.

Additionally, the country’s strong manufacturing prowess made it also to an important export market. About 70 percent of the sectors products are exported, with Germany, Switzerland and France being its main trading partners in the EU. Outside of the EU, the U.S. is its main trading partner.
