Industry revenue of production of electricity in Italy 2011-2023

In what is a continuation of the post-recession trend, domestic production of electricity generated in Italy steadily declined from 2010 reaching 280.2 terawatt hours in 2018. This downward spiral is expected to continue over the short to medium term as well.

However, various factors such as increasing levels of industrialization and the rise in the number of households haven’t meant that the levels of electricity consumption increased over time, reaching 303.4 terawatt hours in 2018. The industry and the tertiary sectors accounted for most of the consumption, followed by the household and the agricultural sector. With imports of electricity accounting for a significant portion of total consumption, domestic revenues are estimated to fall over the next few years.

Displacement of coal-based electricity

One of the major industry trends over the last decade or so has been the rapid displacement of coal-based electricity generation. Instead, there has been a notable shift towards renewable sources such as wind and solar, both of which have experienced exponential growth over the last few years. While energy generated from wind has almost doubled during 2011-2018, solar power increased by around 35 percent during 2012-2017.

Energy efficiency measures to result in lower electricity consumption

In recent years, people have increasingly become more aware about environmental issues and this is expected to change the dynamics of energy consumption not only in Spain but most countries in the world. As a matter of fact, in 2018, a significant share of Italian householders carried out energy efficiency interventions in their houses, with 24 percent opting for highly insulated window fixtures and 21 percent for low consumption boilers.
