In 2021, the refining capacity addition for petroleum under public sector units and joint ventures in India was 161 million metric tons per annum. This was an increase compared to the previous year, wherein the value was 160.7 million metric tons per annum. India has been establishing itself as a major player in the refining industry, and the country's refinery capacity exceeds the demand.
