Operating profit of KEPCO 2014-2022

In 2022, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)'s annual operating profit amounted to a loss of approximately 32.66 trillion South Korean won. This value was a significant decrease from the previous year's operating loss. That year, KEPCO was also ranked as the sixth largest company in South Korea according to the Fortune Global 500.

KEPCO and its subsidiaries

KEPCO is a public corporation that generates, transmits, and distributes electrical power in South Korea, among other roles. It also has engaged in multiple projects abroad in countries such as the Philippines, China, and the UAE. Among KEPCO’s subsidiaries, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP) is the only nuclear power plant operator in the nation.

Nuclear energy in South Korea

Nuclear energy has become a key strategy for South Korea to diversify its energy sources and to move away from its high reliance on energy imports. Nuclear power had a lower settlement tariff price compared to coal on average, and accounted for almost 30 percent of total power generation in the country as of 2021. The current government plans to further increase the share of nuclear power in electricity generation by 2036.
