Based on a U.S. study, the amount of microplastics ingested by humans depended on largely on consumption habits as well as age and sex. For example, water intake exclusively from bottled sources contributed to the ingestion of an additional 90,000 microplastic particles, compared to around 4,000 particles for those who only consumed tap water.
