Length of unimproved roads in Japan 2020, by road width
As of March 31, 2020, approximately 372.24 thousand kilometers of unimproved roads in Japan had a width less than 3.5 meters, representing the overwhelming majority among roads not in line with the standard for road improvements. The standard refers to qualitative criteria (width, alignment, inclination, visibility, etc.) as stipulated by the Ordinance on Road Structure designated roads are required to meet. Standard-improved and unimproved roads add up to the actual length of the network, amounting to roughly 1.23 million kilometers.
