Total active and passive mutual funds in the U.S. 2000-2022
The number of both actively-managed mutual funds and passively-managed index mutual funds in the United States remained relatively consistent between 2000 and 2022. In 2022, there were a total of 6,585 actively-managed mutual funds in the U.S. - a slight decrease of 85 from the previous year. There were only 517 passively-managed index mutual funds in the U.S. in 2022.
