U.S. states restricting schools from teaching race, sex, or inequality 2021-2023
From 2021 to 2023, 18 states have passed laws or approved similar state-level action to restrict teaching critical race theory in schools or limit how teachers can discuss racism, sexism, and issues of systemic inequality in the United States. In comparison, 24 states vetoed, overturned, or stalled indefinitely any state-level action or bills introduced to restrict schools from teaching about race, sex, or inequality. Additionally, a bill was either proposed or was moving through state legislature in New Jersey and North Carolina. Only seven states did not have any such state-level action or bills introduced during that time period.
