By 2014, over 54 million people were members of one of the nearly 35 thousand health clubs in the United States. Considering the high number of gym members in the U.S., it is no surprise that North America is the region with the largest membership base for fitness centers in the world. The total fitness center industry revenue in the U.S. amounted to 24 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, almost 90 percent of the region’s total revenue. Europe is the second biggest market for the health club industry, followed by the Asia-Pacific region.
Health club companies from the U.S., such as Life Time Fitness, are among the top five companies in the industry. In terms of revenue, the biggest health club company in the world is Life Time Fitness, with revenues of almost 1.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2014. The company operates 113 facilities worldwide, of which the majority is in the United States. In relation to the number of facilities worldwide, Anytime Fitness is the industry leader with over 2.700 gyms. The company with the most memberships worldwide however is Planet Fitness, which had a total of about six million members in 2014, two million more than the second-placed 24 Hour Fitness USA.
