
U.S. gym memberships - additional information
The number of fitness center memberships in the United States has steadily increased over the last decade. By 2015, over 55 million people were members of one of the 36 thousand health clubs in the United States. Considering the high number of gym members in the U.S., it is no surprise that North America is the region with the largest membership base for fitness centers in the world. The total fitness center industry revenue in the U.S. amounted to 25.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, almost 90 percent of the region’s total revenue. Europe, however, is in fact the biggest market for the health club industry, followed closely by North America and then the Asia-Pacific region.
Health club companies from the U.S., are among the top five companies in the industry. In terms of revenue, the biggest health club company in the world is Planet Fitness, with revenues of 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. In relation to the number of facilities worldwide, Anytime Fitness is the industry leader with over 3,000 gyms. The company with the most memberships worldwide however is Planet Fitness, which had a total of over seven million members in 2015, 3.5 million more than the second-place 24 Hour Fitness USA.
