In 2016, 38.6 thousand hotels and pubs were licensed for on-sales of alcohol, compared to 41.5 thousand licensed for off-sales. In the UK drinking establishments licensed for on-sale of alcohol are licensed to sell for consumption on the premises after purchase, whereas an off-license means the opposite. Off-licenses are often held by shops.
